| To learn why a cracked tooth causes pain, we should know something about the anatomy of a tooth. Inside the tooth, a hard layer called dentin and the soft tissue called pulp are found under the whiter enamel. The loose pulp is a connective tissue and it contains nerves, blood vessels and cells. When the hard tissues outside the tooth are cracked, chewing causes the movement of those pieces and the pulp becomes irritated. When the biting pressure is let off, the crack can close rapidly. This results in momentary sharp pain. Irritation of the dental pulp is likely to be repeated by chewing. In the course of time, the pulp will be damaged and cannot heal itself any longer. The tooth will continue to hurt while chewing and also become sensitive to temperature fluctuations. The patient has to see his personal endodontist when he encounters a problem of this nature. |
